1999 Michael & Irvine
again & the F399 looks like it is going to be the one.
16 races on the calendar and after the 7th in France Michael was on 32 points Hakkinen 40, One retirement each and Hakkinen 3
wins to Michaels 2 but Ferrari were now closing in on Mclaren and the money was on Michael.
Disaster struck on lap one
of the British G.P. at Silverstone when with the failure of a rear brake Michael went at terrifying speed into the tire wall
at Stowe Corner suffering a double fracture below the right knee, It was indeed a very bad accident but watching the replay
in slow motion showed how incredibly fast the impact was and it certainly could easily have been very much worse.
So
with Michael out for the next 6 races The challenge was in the hands of Eddie Irvine & Mika Salo who took Michaels seat.
Salo produced a 9th, 2nd, 12th, 7th, 3rd & retired. Irvine a 1st, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th & 7th.
With Michael due back in
his seat at Malaysia, The cynics & critics were all at work with the stories that Michael would be back but he would now lack
the speed, He would be slowed down and never regain his previous form. In Malaysia he took pole finished 2nd and had fastest
lap of the race and The same in Japan but Hakkinen had fastest lap.
The final outcome was Hakkinen retained his
championship with 76 points, Irvine 2nd just 2 points behind him, Frentzen 3rd with 54, - Coultard 4th with 48 & Michael 5th with 44. BUT Ferrari Had
the Constructors title by 4 points, Their first since 1983. and things looked even better for 2000
March 1999 saw Michael become a father for the second time, A baby boy is named Mick, brother to Gina Maria.
