Drivers Championship Position - 2nd |
2006 at least common sense prevails and Tyre changes are reinstated. The F248 F1 looks very promising but so does Renaults car & Rumour is Rife Michael will retire at the end of the season.
Renault take the 1st three races then Ferrari the next two, The next 4 Alonso then 3 to Michael. At Monaco Michael recovers from a silly mistake and stalls the car, There is a massive outcry that he did it deliberately to stop Alonso getting pole, I personally cannot see this as Michael was unaware of Alonso's position and as he subsequently starts 22nd and finished 5th - Surely Pole was not THAT important. It certainly showed who his friends were.
Top Gear Clip
In Hungary Felipe Massa was on Pole and in the lead, A safety car sent everyone scurrying into the pits where Michael had to wait behind Felipe, This was the event that put Michael behind and I think lost him a race win. Turkey Saw Massa's first win and Michael unable to keep Alonso behind him finished third. Italy saw a great win From Michael and then The announcement of his retirement at the end of the season, But Michael was now only 2 points Behind Alonso. - A win in China saw a draw on points but with one win more Michael now has the lead. - Disaster in Japan with his first engine failure in a race since 2001, leaves the championship almost unatainable,
Michael needed a win in Brazil with Alonso failing to Score and In what must be one of the most exiting race weekends Michael was easily fastest, Then in Qually 3 a fuel pressure problem leaves him 10th on the Grid, by lap 2 in the race he is 6th then after an Early accident involving Nico Rosberg and a safety car stint, Michael is about to go P4 when he has a Right rear puncture. This puts him back to 19th but after a drive which just went to show why he is a 7 times Champion he finishes 4th only seconds behind third place Jenson Button.
Felipe Massa wins his home Grand Prix but it still leaves Ferrari 5 points short of the constructors title. So as Michael heads into retirement he may not have won or even ended on the podium at his last Grand Prix but he left us with one of his finest displays of driving and was certainly the driver of the day and certainly is - SIMPLY THE BEST
