Drivers Championship Position - (2nd) - Michael was penalised his second place in the championship after he allegedly tried to take out Jacques Villeneuve at the European Grand Prix. He kept his points and his positions in the races. |
1997 and Michael with
Eddie Irvine are the Ferrari pairing again.
Williams Renault is still The Car to beat and Benetton are fading The
Ferrari F310 & F310B shows much improvement BUT Mclaren are rising fast (The car must be good David Coultard was scoring
points with it !!)
Williams have binned last years winner Damon Hill and replaced him with Heinz-Harald Frentzen but
their other driver Jacques Villeneuve is the man to beat and he and Michael are the top 2 drivers never much more than 10
points apart all Season.
So at the final race The European G.P. at Jerez Michael has 5 race wins, 8 podium finishes
and 78 points - Villeneuve 7 race wins, 5 retirements and 77 points. So Michael needed to finish ahead of Villenueve to take
the Championship.
Around Lap 46 Villenueve went to pass on the inside of corner 6 (Dry Sack), Michael Turned in & the
cars collided - Michael went out and Villeneuve went on to finish 3rd and take the Championship. Both were Summoned by the
Stewards & The collision was at deemed a racing accident. (Had it been Senna & Prost nothing would have even been
said).
The Media especially in Germany & Italy threw severe criticism at Michael and the FIA stepped in summoning him
to an extraordinary meeting of it's world council in Paris on November 11th.They decided He had deliberately tried to run
Villeneuve off and he was excluded from his 2nd place in the 97 drivers championship whilst his race results for the season
would remain on the records. He was also also had to take part in a European Union road safety campaign in 1998.
Everyone has their opinions but to me 1995-7 saw F1 start to head away from a RACING culture and head off towards
becoming health & safety parades. If You are racing - the point is to stay in front and make it difficult for the guy behind
to pass, - not pull over and shout "After You My Friend !!!" - I Think That Is Why It Is Called RACING.
January 1997 saw Michael become a father for the first time, A baby Girl named Gina Maria.
