Drivers Championship Position - 2nd |
1998 and Michael still with Team mate Eddie Irvine get to grips with the Ferrari F 300.
Williams Renault become Williams-Mecachrome and set off on a downward spiral following Benetton. Whilst Mclaren Mercedes is now the car to beat and the new F300 is a pretty competent car.
At the end of the season Michael & Irvine had 3 retirements each, Mclaren's Hakkinen also had 3 and Coultard 4.
Michael took 6 race wins & 11 podium finishes, Hakkinen took 8 wins & 11 podiums (Coultard & Hill take the other 2 wins).
So the season ends with Hakkinen taking the Championship and Michael 14 points behind in second place. The Constructors Title is taken by Mclaren but with Ferrari in a Very Strong 2nd place only 23 points behind. Irvine who was 4th in the Driver standings qualified inside the top 8 at every race and apart from a 9th in Germany Michael qualified in the top 4 every race, So at least Ferrari were moving in the right direction.
A direction which ALMOST certainly pointed to the top slot in 1999
