Drivers Championship Position - 1st - Heavy criticism as Michael wins championship after crashing into Damon Hill taking them both out - Unjust in an era which saw Prost & Senna regularly deliberately trying to take each other out. |
1994 Michael has as Team
Mate Jos Verstappen (Verstappen was replaced for the last 2 races by J.J. Lehto). The B194 proves in Michaels hands to be
more than a match for Hill & his Williams-Renault. But 1994 turns into one of the blackest seasons ever.To cover it all need
more space than is available here and there are many good books available that do so more eloquently than I ever
could.
Briefly Michael took the first 2 races then on the third at Imola Barrichello's life was saved when he Almost
drown in his own blood after breaking his nose when his Jordan cleared a tyre barrier at Variante Bassa and slammed into a
fence on the Friday. On the Saturday Roland Ratzenberger Died in final qualifying when his Simtec crashed into a wall on the
Villeneuve corner. Then the Sunday race saw the Death of Ayrton Senna in a crash at Tamburello.
At Silverstone on the warm up lap, Michael passed Hill, who was on pole.Michael was given a penalty, eventually called in for
a stop/go Then black flagged, The team argued the point never told Michael so he never came in to retire The repercussions
went on for the next 3 months. He was disqualified from the British G.P. Accusations of an illegal launch control and
deliberate removal of a fuel filter which was partly a cause of Verstappens Hockenheim pit stop fire were thrown at Benetton.
At Spa Michael took the win only to be disqualified because of excessive ware on the underside skid plank. Two days later he
was handed a two race suspension for the Silverstone incident.Things were not going at all well. It did however in many eyes
seem that everything that was happening was going a long way to bring Damon Hill well into the running for the Championship
challenge. All this had happened after Briatore had heavily criticized Max Moseley & the FIA after Imola and questioned their
capability in running the sport.
So Michael missed The Italian & Portuguese races Miraculously by the European G.P.
Michael was on 76 points and Hill now on 75 good for the F1 circus and a crowd puller for the last 3 races.Michael won the
European then Hill the Japanese so it was off to Adelaide with the score at 92 to Michael 91 Damon.
At Adelaide on lap
36 Michael & Damon come together They both retire - Michael wins and is immediately accused of Cheating by deliberately
taking Hill out. - I have watched this many time - My View Michael makes a mistake and runs along the wall
Bounces back out across the circuit, weaves the front a couple of times to see the wheels are still going the right direction
whilst regaining the racing line and turning into the corner. Meanwhile Hill comes round the corner and sees Michael off line
but coming back, There is a gap but he did not see Michael hit the wall, He instinctively makes a lunge into the ever
decreasing gap and they come together, 2 stupid mistakes resulting in a racing accident.
Damon himself was quoted as saying he never saw Michael at the wall, He just saw the gap and went for it (a stunt he pulls
again twice in 1995 both times taking them both off) Had he seen Michael hit the wall he would have sat back and not gone for
the gap.
Alain Prost - "What he did shows that Schumacher is a real driver,A Racer. He did it just instinctively. He
closed the door. It is the only thing he could do and he did it. It was an aggressive act of defensive driving.
The Season end resluts were Michael wins the Drivers Championship on 92 points, Damon Hill is second on 91 points And Gerhard Berger is third with 41 points
The Constructors Title, Williams-Renault first with 118 points, Benetton-Ford second with 103 and Ferrari third with 71
