Drivers Championship Position - 3rd |
1996 Saw Michael at
Ferrari with Team Mate Eddie Irvine - Replacing the 1995 pairing of J.Alesi & G.Burger.
The Williams Renault was the Car to beat, with Benetton Renault almost on par. The Ferrari F310 was not quite in the same
league But with Michael behind the wheel it sometimes was. Getting to the finish proved the main problem - Michael with 6
retirements and Irvine with 10, They still manage to finish 2nd in the constructors championship (The highest for Ferrari
since 2nd in 1990) 2 points ahead of Benetton BUT 105 points behind Williams.
Michael was third in the Drivers Championship
with 59 points Villeneuve second with 78 & Damon Hill took the drivers title with 97. So a credible performance from Michael
but The Ferrari F310 was indeed in need of improvements.
The highlight was an impressive drive in the wet in Spain from 3rd
on the Grid to Michaels first Ferrari win and of course a fastest lap time of 1m 45.517s. Three consecutive retirements
followed but from Germany on things looked up, As did Michaels car reliability gaining over half his seasons points at these
last six races and with wins at Spa and the Ferrari Home G.P. in Italy. Irvine however had one 5th place in Portugal and six
retirements - a dismal end to his season.
